Middle Eastern Hospital Reaps Benefits of Risk Management Strategy

The Rehabilitation Hospital at King Fahad Medical City (KFMC) has successfully increased quality of care, patient satisfaction and staff safety by developing and implementing a new risk strategy by utilizing best practice guidance from Management of Risk (M_o_R ®).
KFMC is the largest medical hospital in the Middle East. Located in Saudi Arabia; it endeavours to be the leading healthcare establishment in its region. The Rehabilitation Hospital is a specialist facility within KFMC providing rehabilitative services for patients with neurological disorders and musculoskeletal conditions, including spinal cord dysfunction and strokes.
As part of the Rehabilitation Hospital's aim to provide exceptional care to Saudi nationals, they applied for The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accreditation, which required the development of a risk policy. CARF sets quality standards for rehabilitation units to ensure all stakeholders and service users receive the highest possible standards of care. The project was led by Gladys Brooks, now Head of Risk Management at KFMC and Dr. Adel Bataweel, Risk Manager at the Rehabilitation Hospital. They worked with the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) to develop initial material but then looked to Outperform, an APMG Accredited Consulting Organization, for advice on how to develop the strategy further as Outperform was able to offer an international perspective.
Outperform was asked to perform an analysis of the Rehabilitation Hospital's existing risk policy and strategy and look for areas of improvement. John Humphries, a Registered Consultant with Outperform, explained, "We worked with the Hospital to review what they already had in place, which was acceptable, but it needed some development in terms of categorizing risks and rolling out the strategy and processes into the organization." For these reasons, the M_o_R guidance was used as a basis for their work. Outperform offered advice and direction to support the Hospital's risk team in the development of the approach to risk management, but the implementation of the project was the responsibility of the risk team itself. Outperform provided guidelines which were incorporated into the Hospital's well established culture of strong leadership and teamwork in order to deliver the successful development and implementation of the new risk policy.
As a result, the Rehabilitation Hospital has seen improved quality of care, patient satisfaction and staff safety as well as aiding informed decision-making - they also achieved CARF accreditation.
Because the approach is non-prescriptive, it can be adapted to all areas of the Hospital. The positive outcomes have been recognized by the management team at KFMC, who are now working with Outperform and the Rehabilitation Hospital's risk team to roll out the risk management approach to the entire medical city and gain further industry specific accreditation.
